Umbrella Insurance Policies

Ask Jim

My attorney advised me to get an umbrella or excess liability insurance policy for $1,000,000 – to protect my assets – is this a good strategy to follow?

Yes! An umbrella policy provides another layer of liability protection over and above your auto and property insurance. According to a USA Today article, the average wrongful death jury award is around $800,000! It can be a good idea to buy an umbrella insurance policy if your assets plus your income over the next few years is greater than the maximum liability coverage you can get through your auto and homeowners insurance policies. Otherwise, a lawsuit could wipe out a big chunk of your savings.

While these cases aren’t everyday occurrences, hundreds of suits are filed daily. And, it could happen to you! Umbrella policies aren’t expensive – usually around $250 per year for $1,000,000 worth of added coverage!

If you would like to increase your liability protection, or simply have questions about your coverages, give my office a call. It’s easy to apply for this type of policy and we can do it right over the phone.
